John Buttermore of Wixom, Michigan won the first Sports Car Club of America National Championship of his career last week at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Buttermore is a GM engineer and Corvette enthusiast. He races his Corvette in SCCA's elite Touring 1 class - in this class, some bolt-on performance modifications are allowed, but the cars are still fundamentally street-legal and based on actual cars taken off the production line.
This year's Touring 1 race was a testament to the dominance of the Corvette at this level of sports car development. Of the 12 cars entered in the race, 11 were Corvettes - including all of the podium finishers and well down the standings. The Ferrari 360 and Dodge Viper are also eligible in the class, but only one Viper raced this year.
