In the ordinary way of things, most automakers shy away from naming their competitors in advertisements - it's a direct challenge and why give the competition the free name recognition?
But there's one exception - and that's when you want to do a complete smackdown of Brand X. Or in this case, brands P, F, and BMW. This television commercial from Chevy touting the Corvette ZR1 in American Le Mans Series racing is just such a smackdown of the European contenders.
The ad isn't entirely honest, even though it is factually true. ALMS did require Chevy to dial back the power to race in the GT2 class, but that's because Chevy wanted to race the 638 horsepower ZR1 Corvette - when they could have raced a 505 horsepower Z06 without nearly so many modifications, or they could have entered a base 430 horsepower Corvette and probably received some extra power. It's not like these cars are raced in street trim - far from it.
But this smackdown makes a fantastic ad, and I laughed out loud while I was watching it. I'm betting you will too.
