The online rumor mill is hot today with word of a new mid-engined Corvette in the works. The blog at egmCarTech is quoting GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre as saying that the next Corvette "looks quite different. It's totally redesigned inside and out."
Rumors are also flying that an engineer at GM's estranged Saab stepchild has said that the Swedish team had been working on a double-clutch semi-automatic transmission for the next generation Corvette, and that the new generation would be mid-engined. Other rumors have it that the new Corvette will be a turbocharged V6.
But look at what Whitacre actually said - the next generation Corvette looks different and has been redesigned. He didn't say V6 and he didn't say mid-engined. I'd say that until there's more to go on than rumors, anyone outside GM who claims to know what's coming for Corvette is blowing smoke.
