Each August, the sports car world converges on Monterey, California for a bevy of wonderful classic car events. The lineup for the middle of August includes the Monterey Historic Car Races, Concorso Italiano, the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance, and of course, several big-time classic car auctions. At this point, if you decide to go, you're looking at staying in Salinas or Santa Cruz - about 20-40 miles away - to get a decent price on a hotel room!
As usual, RM Auctions is hosting its annual Sports & Classics of Monterey auction from August 12-14 - with the 11th as a preview day. Several rare Corvettes have been consigned to this auction and will cross the block starting on Friday the 13th of August.
My personal favorite among the rare and interesting Corvettes at this auction is a 1963 Split-Window Coupe. 1963 was the first year of the C2 "Sting Ray" design, first year for Corvette coupes, first year of independent rear suspension, and the only year for the famous split-window coupe body. Later coupes all had a one-piece rear window. This car is expected to sell for $85,000 - $115,000.
Chief among the rare 'Vettes on auction is a first-year 1953 Corvette roadster. This car is expected to bring between $225,000 and $300,000 as one of 200 remaining in the world. Only 300 Corvettes were made in 1953.
Other great Corvettes at this auction include a 1962 Fuel-Injected Roadster, a 1963 "Pilot Line" Sting Ray Roadster - the 15th Corvette made in that year, and a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Fuel-Injected Roadster.
