1964 Pontiac Banshee - Unique Corvette Relative Still Unsold

From Jeffrey Zurschmeide, About.com GuideMarch 15, 2010

Follow me on:

This 1964 GM concept car was badged as a potential Pontiac Banshee, but you don't have to look too hard to see the DNA of the yet-to-be-born C3 Corvette showing through.

This unique bit of GM history was conceived by John DeLorean to give Pontiac a more racy image. The Banshee was designed with a 155 horsepower straight 6-cylinder engine, so it would remain less powerful than a Corvette. In fact, the car was intended to compete with the Ford Mustang, but eventually that honor went to the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird.

It's pretty rare for a manufacturer's prototype concept car to end up in private hands, but this one did. The car has barely 1500 original miles on the odometer, and it has been carefully preserved.

The car was offered for sale at the RM Auction offered in conjunction with the Amelia Island Concours D'Elegance on March 13, 2010. The high bid was $325,000, substantially less than the $400,000-$600,000 that RM expected, and so the car did not sell. Perhaps it will turn up again though, so if you want a truly unique prototype related to the Corvette, your chance may be coming soon.

yea the car was cancelled because it would out preform the corvette since it would have equal power as the vette and 500lbs lighter. thats why it was cancelled.
